—This unique natural specimen was dug by me on April 8, 2024, during the total solar eclipse! The specimen was laid out after digging in the eclipse light as well.— Check out this unusual raw specimen with an attractive combination of minerals! This is black tourmaline (var. Dravite), and quartz, self collected from Powers Farm, Pierrepont, NY. The tourmaline from Powers Farm is a non-prismatic variety, which means it grows in a blocky and compact form that resembles a garnet, but is tourmaline. In this cluster, black tourmaline crystals have intergrown and sandwiched between layers of white quartz, creating a “black and white” layer cake. The black crystals really stand out against the quartz! The black tourmaline is deeply shaded, organic, raw, and displays gemmy faces. This specimen has a jagged and aesthetic appearance--I love the sculptural lines and eye-catching edges! Powers Farm is a famous New York mineral locality, which has been dug and studied for more than 100 years. Powers Farm is a complex locality with multiple zones, and a wide range of mineral species and pseudomorphs. It is best known for its deep black tourmaline crystals, and happily, was within the totality path for the 2024 solar eclipse! Dimensions: contact me Weight: contact me FORMATION: Dravite (and sometimes Uvite from this locality) are part of the Tourmaline group, which forms in nearly every color. Though most global black tourmaline is the Schorl variety, Powers Farm tourmaline has been studied and is the variety Dravite, or can also be Uvite (the Dravite is more abundant and common here). Tourmaline has a hardness of 7-7.5, and is found in many localities globally. HEALING: Black tourmaline is associated with protection, purification, and grounding energy.
