It is only blue in a few places in the world, one of which is Colorado. One of the best-known localities for Amazonite is near Lake George, Colorado—the Pikes Peak batholith wraps around the area, creating a massive zone of pegmatites that produce highly collectible minerals. The Lake George area is known for its fine amazonite, goethite, and smoky quartz specimens. Smoky quartz gets its smoky shade from natural exposure to radiation within the earth.
