This specimen is a substantial fragment of an enormous meteorite known as the Campo del Cielo meteorite. It is comprised of nickel, iron, and other trace metals. Campo del Cielo was discovered in 1576 by Spanish explorers in Chaco, Argentina. The largest fragment of this huge meteorite weighed an immense 37 tons. Scientists have estimated the date of the fall to be around 3950-5800 years ago (based on radiocarbon dating of charred trees in the vicinity of the impact). This is a beautiful and quite large sized specimen--it is quite dense and features interesting bends and flaring texture! It is naturally magnetic, and would make a great specimen for crystal healing, mineral collection, or for fans of space! They are composed of the elements that make up planetoid cores--they can teach us quote a bit about planetary formation. The earliest usage of iron came from meteorites; early man fashioned them into tools and weapons, as well as cultural objects. HEALING PROPERTIES: Meteorites are rare and highly prized.
