This beauty is a cluster containing a pair of fossilized (calcite replacement) bivalve shells on matrix! The original clamshell bivalve shape of the shell remains, but the surface has been completely replaced by yellow calcite—the golden yellow mineral gives this fossil an aesthetic contrast to the cream and grey tones of the cluster. The second shell retains the soft white tones it probably had originally, giving this cluster a unique look. The yellow shell fluoresces an electric yellow-green shade under black light (UV)! This natural beauty has a lot of personality, and would make an unusual addition to any mineral or fossil buff's collection! Locality: Rucks pit, Fort Drum, Okeechobee County, Florida. One of the most unique calcite occurrences is replacement of fossil forms--in this case, a shell. The shell was most likely originally composed of aragonite--calcite is a more stable form of aragonite. Over time, layers of sediment were deposited over the shell, and through the process of diagenesis, calcite replaced and preserved the form of the original mineral growth. Healing: Fossils are thought to show us the "big picture"--they are associated with slow and steady personal growth.
