This is a crystal cluster of rich black tourmaline, also known as Schorl. The crystal features striated structure and excellent luster--schorl is prone to brittleness and breakage, so the structural lines and surface textures of this crystal make it especially desirable. One end is terminated, and the other has an organic roughness. The cluster is composed of one large single crystal with smaller smoky quartz crystal segments attached. Damaged sections are left unpolished, and are seen in chips and abrasions. This inky black crystal cluster would be ideal for display, gridding, or jewelry work! Tourmaline has a hardness of 7-7.5. Brazil is a major locality for tourmaline, and the Erongo region of Namibia has become a prominent locality for tourmaline and other pegmatite minerals as well. Tourmaline varieties commonly form in association with quartz, feldspar, mica group, and other minerals. Smoky quartz is natural quartz which has been exposed to natural sources of radiation, causing a smoky color. HEALING: Tourmaline is believed to attract love, and balance masculine and feminine energy. It is also thought to help us to seek joy and heal emotional wounds. The black shade represents grounding, protection, and purification.
